About Allanridge

Allanridge, situated approximately 175 km northeast of Bloemfontein, was established in 1947 as a settlement in the Free State goldfields. The town was named after Allan Roberts, whose borehole's proximity to the gold-bearing reef led to mining activities in the area. The town's layout was designed by William Backhouse, who also planned Welkom, the second-largest city in the Free State province. The town became a municipality on 21 December 1956 but was incorporated into the Matjhabeng Local Municipality on 5 December 2000, along with Welkom and other neighboring towns. Allanridge is the main center for the Loraine Gold Mining Company, which processes thousands of tons of gold-bearing ore monthly. The tall headgear and reduction works of the Lorraine gold mine are prominent landmarks in the town. The Mynsinkgat Museum, located on the farm Aandenk, chronicles the history of gold mining in and around Allanridge. The Allan Roberts Prospectors Borehole Memorial, shaped like a key, symbolizes the unlocking of the Free State goldfields. The town also features a 9-hole golf club, bowling green, swimming pool, and squash courts, providing recreational facilities for residents and visitors. Allanridge's economy is primarily driven by gold mining, with the Loraine Gold Mining Company being the main employer. The town's infrastructure includes basic amenities such as schools, healthcare facilities, and local markets. While Allanridge offers a peaceful and community-oriented environment, it lacks the extensive cultural and entertainment options found in larger South African cities. In summary, Allanridge is a small, historically rich gold-mining town that offers a tranquil lifestyle with essential amenities. Its significance lies in its mining heritage and the role it plays in the Free State's gold mining industry.
